HAG were recently contracted to install shutters at the renowned Wales Millennium Centre. The Centre in Cardiff Bay is an artistic hub home to eight art organisations and regularly hosts a range of theatre events, including opera, musicals and ballets.
In order to keep the service entrance of the centre secure, a HAG Armourguard N2M roller shutter was installed, providing a high level of security without compromising vision. The shutter would be used by the Wales Millenium Centre and the National Orchestra of Wales, so the shutter installed needed to be well suited to continual use.
The use of Armourguard N2M provided the level of security and operation the centre required. Constructed from galvanised steel that is punched with apertures that allow for 55% air flow, the model is well suited for car parks and other areas where a high volume of fumes requires good ventilation.
The shutter design required slight modification before installation, as the adjoining BBC building had a plus and minus 12.5mm expansion movement. Therefore, the fixing point on one side of the shutter was designed to accommodate this, allowing for the support to move with the building without the roller shutter moving.
The shutter also needed to be installed so it didn’t interfere with existing service at high level, and required retro fitting of an infill panel to accommodate the different level profiles of the road and pavements.
From initial enquiry to installation, the project took four months to complete, including changes to the structural drawings and modification of the designs. There were minimal restrictions during installation, however, deliveries and access through the entrance has to be limited, with all pedestrians being stopped from entering the works area.
